Children's Illustrated Encyclopedia Hardcover – May 17, 2010

I used this book in a Montessori classroom for toddlers. They *adored* it because it has really great pictures and explanations of things, and would group around the book just paging through. I bought another copy for my son to use at home, and we have a lot of fun doing the same thing. I like to flip through and read myself!

Excellent Book I recommend you have one at home for you and the kids.Well, Greatly Illustrated will help with many assignments and even better.

My mom, not knowing how to access my 'wish list' to see the kid's dictionary I wanted for my 5-year-old son, ordered this illustrated encyclopedia for him. Luckily it arrived well enough before Christmas for me to peruse before wrapping it. I had my mom return it!For the most part the encyclopedia was fine, what you would expect from such a product. However, my mother & I were both appalled when we found the full page in this "children's encyclopedia" under the subject of "reproduction." That entry focuses on human reproduction, and includes an explicit illustration of sexual union of the male/female private parts. If you want your child educating him/herself about sex to this degree of detail in his/her own encyclopedia, that's fine. I just wanted to offer a warning for parents who prefer to be more involved and conservative in their approach to a younger child's initial introduction to sexual education.Other than that, the book seemed to have quite a liberal slant to it, which is not what I had in mind for my son. I just wanted straight, unbiased, G-rated facts for my eager-to-learn boy, with pictures that would pique his interest in the world around him. A simply worded definition for 'reproduction' in a general sense would suffice, and if he has more questions about that, he can come to me and I can explain it in further detail, with visuals of my own choosing. If there must be detail, the topic should be presented as a means for humans and animals to procreate, to produce offspring, with less emphasis on the pleasure involved or the act itself. He is FIVE! This book goes too far in the wrong direction; not the attitude towards sex I with to have promoted in my family. Best, in my opinion to keep it basic and let parents (or at least school teachers) fill in the gaps as children have questions.Luckily, my mom was able to find & order the dictionary I had selected for him, and it arrived before Christmas.

Several years ago, I started to tutor a man from Ecuador in English. As time went on I realized thst he (in his middle forites) wasin fact too old to become an English speaker. Almost all of his time was spent exclusively with Spanish speakers. So I concentrated more on speaking English to him and reading with him. He has become quite good at understanding English and is interested in a large variety of subjects -politics, acience, geography. When I decided to discontinue our meetings, I wanted to give him something that he would enjoy - that he could understand and that would be varied. I used the internet for my search and decided on the Children's Encyclopedia for the following reasons: 1) An adult encyclopedia Like the Columbia would have been far beyond his ability. 2) The recency of publication was attractive. 3) The emphasis on pictures was appealing. 4) The price seemed fair. 5) The vocabulary was very well chosen - it was simple but not childish.I was delighted with it and so was he.

it's a good choice for grade 5 and grade 6.my son love it so much.he spent almost 4 hours on reading this book last night.

The DK Encyclopedia is best for the one who has hunger for knowledge...

子供向けのイラストが織り込まれた百科事典は多数の出版社から発売されているが、この本はDK社から出版されていることに注目して頂きたい。DK社とはイラスト本の草分け的存在でありその印刷の綺麗さ、読み易さには定評がある。そのDK社が手がけている百科事典なので他社の物とは一味違う。内容はA-Zのアルファベット順になっていて国別の説明なども比較的詳しく載っている。ちなみに日本は3ページにわたり解説されている。韓国は1ページ、中国は4ページであった。主に一つの事柄に対し1ページから2ページを使って説明している点が本書の大きな特徴である。紙質も良くイラストも綺麗で日本の百科事典と比較してみても遜色ない出来栄えだ。他社のイラスト百科事典は文字が中心でイラストも載っている程度の物が多い。しかしこの本はあくまでもイラストが中心であり説明は簡潔に付けられている程度である。したがって絵や写真などを見るだけである程度は理解する事が出来るようになっている。英語の説明も特に難しい表現は使っておらず語学の習得教材としても適しているといえる。作家の司馬遼太郎氏は調べ物をする時、子供用の百科事典を使っていた事は有名な話だ。氏曰く子供用の事典は一流の作家陣が執筆していて分かり易く難しい事柄も簡潔に述べられているからだ。これらの点は調べ物をする時に大変有り難くなおかつ重要な事でもある。本書は現時点で最新版でありオバマ大統領が載っている。
