Price gouging/good product
I buy this regularly. The price keeps being gouged almost monthly now. It was steady at less than half of the price today not too long ago. Then each month it's crept upward. To today's hideous price. What gives?Perhaps a call to Thorne Research would help figure out why this very useful supplement has been priced to the stratosphere.

Good for HCU patients with CBC deficiency but doubtful for MTHFR patients.
I have been using these for my niece with homocysteinuria (HCU) for about a year now. Along with anhydrous betain, these work out better than her previous vitamins and brought her Hcy down in 70's. I guess its because of the active forms of B6, B9 and B12 which made the difference. These are expensive though and I found HomocysteX Plus by Seeking Health quite comparable in both quantity, types and quality of products at 3/4th the price. I am therefore switching to HomocysteX Plus this time.I have also used this methyl guard plus in other patients with possible MTHFR SNP but 3 out of 4 could not tolerate it well. I am not sure if its due to the combination (as it is sometimes recommended to gradually start folates and then B12) or its just that these patients can't tolerate the Methy cobalamin or folates at all. Since it is a known fact that certain people with methylation disorders can have an adverse reaction to methycobalamin or L5MTHFR , I am not holding this product responsible. I have now switched them to " B complex Minus" by Seeking Health which is without B12 and B9 and will see how they respond.

I did call Thorne and explained my tests and they confirmed that the Methyl-Guard Plus was a better choice for me
I have always had an elevated level of homocysteine. I discovered from a recent blood test that I have the A1298C C/C genotype which results in significantly reduced activity of MTHFR. This leads to a reduced level of homocysteine to methionine. The resulting buildup of homocysteine can increase an individual’s risk for developing cardiovascular disease through the buildup of plaque.Usually the recommendation for individuals is to consider supplementation with the active L-methylfolate with vitamin B-12. I had previously used the Thorne 5-MTHF capsules along with Thorne’s B-Complex #12. It was difficult to determine the ratio between the MFTR and B-12 capsules as I needed to take several MTHF capsules and it’s not a 1:1 ratio. The Thorne Methyl-Guard Plus has within it the right ratio. So one can take several tablets and it the ratio of B-Complex #12 remains constant. If you price the individual components I believe that it’s actually less expensive to use the Methyl-Guard Plus. I did call Thorne and explained my tests and they confirmed that the Methyl-Guard Plus was a better choice for me.A year ago my homocysteine level was 17. I just got my last blood test and it’s now 10, within the optimal range. It’s taken about 9 months to bring it into range but it has been a constant reduction.

Could be the Perfect Solution if you have Methylation Cycle Defects
These supplements are changing my life. I found out a few months ago that I have several methylation cycle defects, and those genetic conditions have caused minor health problems all my life. Within a week of taking Methyl-Guard Plus, many of my symptoms started going away. First I noticed that I was waking up without being stiff or hurting. Then I noticed that my rash (of 15 years) was starting to go away. And most recently, I was up a Tahoe and felt turbocharged when hiking at 8000 ft.Obviously, this supplement isn't needed by everyone; however, if you have a MTR/MTRR/MTHFR mutation this might just change your life. Please be careful. If your methylation cycle is severely plugged, start out with small amounts of this supplement. More may not be better, especially for the first month or so.Note also, that you might need stop vitamins and other supplements that you are taking that have the "standard" versions of the B vitamins, in order to get the full effect of this supplement. For example, if you have a MTHFR C677T, you might need to avoid folic acid.

Four Stars
It is required by my doctor. Preferred Methyl-Guard (not the Plus) taken twice a day. I suppose this works.

Helps Methylation throuighout the body
The active forms of several B vitamins are an ideal supplement for those with methylation issues or a genetic mutation MTHFR C677T. Methylation is a key process in the body.Determination of genetic mutation requires lab tests and can inform a patient's treatment.I work with an Integrative Medicine specialist MD at the Cleveland Clinic. I suggest anyone considering this product do so with a competent doctor and adequate testing.Taken from web: " Methyl-Guard PLUS 90c by Thorne Research contains higher amounts of 5MTHF (the active form of folate),pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (active B6), andmethylcobalamin (active B12),than our original Methyl-Guard. We have also addedriboflavin 5'-phosphate (the active form of vitamin B12) for its positive effect on homocysteine metabolism and methylation. These ingredients provide the necessary nutrients the body uses to push forward the process of methylation. Methyl-Guard Plus is more concentrated, so your patients will appreciate the recommended daily amount of three capsules which will improve compliance. Original Methyl-Guard is still available.

Absolutely love it!
My adult daughter with Downs syndrome was the first to be diagnosed with A1298C mutation. Since then, 2 other adult children have the the gene mutation issues as well as me. We started on Thorne Methyl-Guard Plus about 8 months ago. The improvement in my DS daughter has been amazing. The progress has been slow and steady, but she is definitely so much more alert, attentive, communicative, joyful, etc. etc..... Everyone is noticing the dramatic changes in her! My IBS and other health issues are improving as well. I recommend this product for anyone with methylation cycle defects because it has worked so well for us. I always keep plenty on hand as I don't want to run out at all!
