Miramistin was developed during the Soviet Union’s Cold War Space Program as an antiseptic for use in orbital satellite stations, requiring broad antimicrobial activity against resistant isolates with low toxicity. The compound was initially designated ‘BX-14’ and remained classified until the political changes of the 1980s.
